In a move to enhance cybersecurity efforts, the United Kingdom's National Cyber Force (NCF) is set to become more integrated with police operations, alongside military and intelligence agencies. General Sir Jim Hockenhull, the four-star chief of the UK's Strategic Command, discussed the future plans for the elite hacking unit during a conference in London.
Speaking at Recorded Future's Predict 2023 conference, Hockenhull highlighted the unique approach of the UK's cybersecurity strategy. Unlike other countries with a military cyber command, the UK aims to develop a comprehensive capability that ranges from combating organized crime and online sexual exploitation to countering terrorism and engaging in military operations.
Hockenhull emphasized that the NCF's integration into wider police, intelligence, and military operations is a long-term goal.
"I think we'll find that it becomes much more embedded and becomes a much more common thing,” Hockenhull stated.
Strategic Command, responsible for protecting the country's essential military capabilities, is keen on expanding the NCF's role. Hockenhull described these capabilities as the "Crown Jewels of defense," emphasizing their importance in safeguarding national security.
While the heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force may have differing perspectives, Hockenhull stressed the significance of defensive capacity in mounting operations. He highlighted the role of the Permanent Joint Headquarters in overseeing global operations, as well as the responsibility for Special Forces, Defence Intelligence, and the National Cyber Force.
The integration of the NCF with policing operations is expected to enhance the UK's ability to combat cyber threats and ensure a comprehensive response to cybersecurity incidents.
