The Japanese government announced on Thursday, October 19, that a Japanese businessman, who had been detained in March on suspicion of espionage, has now been officially arrested by China, First Post reported.
The arrest has raised concerns and tensions between the two countries, prompting Tokyo to urge Beijing to release its citizens to avoid further strain on the bilateral relationship.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno stated:
"We have strongly urged China for an immediate release at various levels, and we will continue to do so."
The arrested individual, a man in his 50s, was formally arrested in mid-October, according to Matsuno.
Although the Japanese foreign ministry has not confirmed the identity of the arrested individual, news agency Kyodo claimed that he is a worker of the pharmaceutical business Astellas Pharma (4503.T). Astellas Pharma, however, stated that it is still gathering information from the ministry.
In China's legal system, a formal arrest of a suspect leads to a more thorough investigation by prosecutors before filing charges.
Japanese media reports suggest that the detained person has been employed in China for 20 years and was previously a top official of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China.
