In a State Department conference on Monday, Rafael Grossi, the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned that the international community must take every precaution to prevent the Iran nuclear standoff from spiraling into a situation similar to North Korea's, US federal news agency, Voice of America, reported on October 16.
Grossi emphasized the need to avoid a repeat of the failure witnessed with North Korea, which expelled UN inspectors before proceeding with nuclear weapons testing.
"We have to deploy every effort to prevent this problem, this current debate on what is happening and what can be done in Iran [from] becoming a failure on the part of the international community to prevent a country that has capabilities which could potentially lead to the development of nuclear weapons from doing it," Grossi stated.
Highlighting the parallels with North Korea, Grossi stressed that the world cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea, tested nuclear weapons after expelling UN inspectors, leading to a global crisis that remains unresolved.
