Iran-Back Militants Launch an Attack Disguised as a Tanker Truck at US Forces
Tensions Escalate at the Iraq-Syria Border
Earlier this week, Iranian-backed militants in Iraq launched a series of 122mm artillery rockets at U.S.-led coalition forces in neighboring Syria. The attack, carried out using an improvised array of launchers disguised inside a modified tanker truck, was captured in a video clip that has since emerged on social media.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. on December 3, when 15 rockets originating in Iraq were fired at the U.S. base Rumalyn Landing Zone in Syria, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the top U.S. military command in the Middle East. Fortunately, there were no injuries to personnel or damage to equipment reported.
The Rumalyn Landing Zone, located in the northeastern tip of Syria near the Iraqi border, serves as a forward operating location for the U.S.-led coalition. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization encompassing various Iranian-backed militias, claimed responsibility for the attack.
CENTCOM, in coordination with Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), identified the point of origin using uncrewed ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) assets. The location was then passed on to Iraqi Security Forces, who promptly moved in and conducted an investigation.
Following the attack, Iraqi forces recovered the improvised launcher vehicle used in the assault. The vehicle was found to have a total of 20 launch tubes, with five of the loaded rockets malfunctioning.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the U.S.-led coalition forces operating in the region. As tensions between the United States and Iran persist, the threat of attacks from Iranian-backed militants remains a constant concern.
The U.S.-led coalition, primarily focused on combating the Islamic State (ISIS) in both Iraq and Syria, continues to work closely with regional partners to enhance security measures and prevent further destabilization.
While no immediate response has been announced, this latest attack underscores the need for increased vigilance and preparedness among coalition forces operating in the region. As tensions continue to simmer, both sides must exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions to avoid further escalation.
The recovery of the launcher vehicle by Iraqi forces demonstrates the importance of close coordination and cooperation between the U.S.-led coalition and its regional partners. By working together, they can effectively identify and neutralize threats posed by Iranian-backed militias, ensuring the safety and security of coalition forces and the stability of the region.
As investigations into the attack continue, it is crucial for coalition forces to remain on high alert and adapt their security strategies accordingly. With the ever-evolving nature of asymmetric warfare, constant vigilance is necessary to mitigate future threats.
The U.S.-led coalition remains committed to its mission of countering ISIS and maintaining regional stability. Despite the challenges posed by Iranian-backed militants, coalition forces will continue to work tirelessly to protect their personnel and assets, while seeking opportunities for diplomatic resolutions to ongoing conflicts.
