China has agreed to provide funding for the final stages of construction of the New Yalu River Bridge, a project that has the potential to significantly enhance trade and commerce between China and North Korea. Residents in both countries have confirmed this development, according to a report by Radio Free Asia.
The construction of the bridge, which connects the Chinese city of Dandong with North Korea's Sinuiju, was completed nearly a decade ago. However, the project has faced delays on the North Korean side, preventing it from becoming operational.
The New Yalu River Bridge is located downstream from the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which was built during World War II by the Japanese army. The existing bridge, with its single rail track and a single lane for cars and trucks, is limited in its capacity to handle heavy loads, restricting trucks weighing more than 20 tons from crossing. The new bridge, once operational, will replace the outdated structure and alleviate the congestion caused by the increasing volume of trade between the two nations.
The completion of the bridge has been eagerly anticipated by the residents of both countries. A resident of North Pyongan province, who spoke to RFA Korean on condition of anonymity for security reasons, highlighted the significance of the new bridge. He said:
"All import and export logistics between North Korea and China currently rely on the old Friendship Bridge, which was constructed before liberation."
Opening the new Yalu River Bridge will result in a substantial increase in imports and exports, significantly strengthening our country's economy."
Recognizing the potential economic benefits, North Korea has formally requested additional funding from China to expedite the completion of the bridge. This request comes as both countries seek to enhance economic cooperation and improve connectivity.
